“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), the psalmist tells us, reminding us that prayer demands an end to chatter, an end to distraction, a focus on what really matters. Prayer requires of us that we hear —— if only for an instant —— the “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12) of God calling to us, for this voice offers us a way to live that is different from the one the world offers —— different and infinitely better.
